ARTLAB x dayze painted pumpkin tips

We’ve teamed up with the amazing artist, Libby Esler, founder of ARTLAB for her best pumpkin painting tips. Why? Well, it’s a lot less faff, mess and the kids *might* actually sit down and do this for longer than five minutes!

“Pumpkin painting is so much more fun than carving and also a lot less mess!!! All hail the painted pumpkin, glorious colour and beauty instead of fear and dread! It’s much safer for kids too. I love painting pumpkins as they are a mediative pleasure to paint. The kids can go crazy with creativity, as you can paint ANYTHING on a pumpkin. So what will you paint?”

Libby Esler, artist + founder of ARTLAB

Libby’s painted pumpkin tips + tricks…

Prep work: do this the day/night before for the ultimate finish…

  • Wash and dry your pumpkin first.

  • Then seal the pumpkin with mod-podge varnish, Hobbycraft has a great range.

  • Paint the pumpkin with two coats of acrylic undercoat (you can also use house paint as a base paint)

Now for the fun part to do with the kids…

  • Make sure you draw your full design before you start painting.

  • Use acrylic waterproof paint, as you are able to leave the pumpkins outdoors.

  • Use big brushes for large areas, and small brushes for detailed areas.

  • Glow in the dark paint is so much fun to use!!! (Don’t forget to expose your pumpkin to light indoors before the big event, as the glow in the dark will be brighter this way).

Why we love Libby’s ARTLAB classes for dayze + nights out…

Ask any parent in our hometown of Leamington Spa what they love about Libby’s art classes and the answers include her positive energy, how amazing she is with the kids, and the way she sparks joy in the classes she teaches.

What you may not know, is that ARTLAB also runs mindfulness art classes for adults, birthday parties for kids and also runs pop-up art workshops at schools and some of the coolest UK festivals. So, get in touch with Libby if you are interested in organising an event, and don’t forget to use the free dayze app to plan and invite the gang!
