Spring cleaning + organisational hacks that work

The clocks have sprung forward, the days are brighter, and many of us are starting to feel the sort-the-house and life-out itch, including dayze co-founder Lizzie who shared her organisational hacks inspired by the Home Edit last week in our weekly Sunday picks.

Here’s our round-up of the best spring cleaning and organisational hacks the dayze community and we have tried and tested and go to show that it's possible to have the best of both worlds: kids and a clean house. Well, almost!

We love the super quick, easy and chemical-free cleaning hacks our pals at Seep share on Instagram, including:

Clean your sofa: Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda on your sofa and let it sit before hoovering it off. It helps release odors and light stains in fabric, you know - smushed in snacks and split drinks!

De-gross your microwave: Remove caked-on stains by microwaving half a cup of water and the juice of half a lemon on high for three minutes. The steam will loosen the grime for easy wiping and leave a nice smell.

Keep matching bed linens together

Hands up if you are fed up with looking for the matching pillow cases every time you change the bed? One of the dayze gang told us a great hack a while back, which is the to place the sheets in the pillowcase. Smart, hey?!

Get crayon off the walls

Little artists love to express themselves on paper, card, and let’s face it, tables and walls, too! We’ve tried and tested this hack and can confirm it works. Point a hair dryer at the waxy work of art until it melts a bit (around 30 seconds). Then, wipe off the mark with a moist baby wipe.

Clean the kids’ plastic toys

Let’s be honest, plastic toys get pretty gross pretty quickly from being dragged around the garden and played with at every mealtime! We’re yet to try it, but one of the dayze community swears by throwing plastic toys (dinosaurs, action figured, Playmobil, etc.) into a mesh laundry bag, and tightly tying up the top. They then pop the mesh bag into the washing machine with a bit of detergent and run the gentlest cycle with warm water. FYI, this will be noisy!

Lego mat

Huge shout out to @KerryPalmerYoga for this amazing product and organisational hack. This playmat is an easy way to store all those hundreds of teeny tiny lego bits in one place. Thanks, Kerry!

Keep your kid’s paperwork in order

So many forms, and so little time or space to store them! A colour-coded organiser like this one from Ryman’s will keep the must-do and must-sign forms in easy reach.

Emergency gift drawer

We’ve all been there, a last-minute kid’s party you’ve not had time to shop for. That’s when the emergency gift drawer (or box) will keep you on track! Make the most of sales and offers and stock up on gifts. We asked the dayze community a while back and over 60% of those who answered confirmed they have a go-to emergency gift drawer!

Organise the kid’s art

If your dining table is covered with artwork (maybe the recycle bin is overflowing!) then this is a genius hack! The My Little Da Vinci frame can display your little one’s art and store up to 49 prints behind with a spring-loaded backplate. Brilliant!

Spinning desk pen and craft sorter

Keep things organised AF and also easy for the kids to grab what they need when they need it. Lizzie is a big fan of this carousel from Amazon.
